Microsoft launches a new version of Skype for Linux
For more than five years have not been a release of Skype for Linux, but today Microsoft announces a new release of Skype software loaded with features and new interface, it seems that Microsoft has decided that it is time to care about Linux on the desktop; especially after filling much attention during the past two years in the field of servers and cloud computing.
The new version of Skype use WebRTC technology to handle voice calls, a technique that is considered within the VoIP service (short for protocol VoIP), and this would continue to support Linux updates over the coming years, and works the new application techniques (Chromium-based Electron shell and Node .js combo), making it gives a feeling that a desktop application.
This version Alpha, and therefore not all features are present, as it has many flaws, including an inability to make a connection with someone who owns an older version of Skype, here's a list of defects:
- The inability to make a video call yet.
- Inability to Share on Desktop.
- The inability to run two agents at the same moment.
- No support for 32-bit.
Things that you can do it:
- Instant Messaging
- Voice calls
- Voice calls associational (Group)
- Add contacts
- The possibility of using new Emoji
Those defects mentioned will not stay for a long time, because the development team is planning to speed up updates for Skype on Linux, where he will launch a new version every two weeks, and this is the opposite of what happened in the past years, as it was this rare, so Those defects will be gone soon.
Microsoft is also looking forward to providing the software package Snap later and support on Ubuntu Phone.
To download the new version of Skype on Linux press here, but remember that it will not work properly, because it is "Alpha".
